Chapter 4 - The Second Family

The room spun wildly as I stared at the horrifying photograph resting on the faded motel bedspread.

The date stamped on the bottom corner of the image was from exactly three years ago.

For half of my marriage, my abusive husband had been living a complete double life with another woman.

Cole explained that the woman in the picture was named Sarah, and she lived in a wealthy suburb just twenty miles away.

He revealed that Daniel had embezzled the millions specifically to fund Sarah's lavish lifestyle and pay for their child's expensive private medical care.

Megan let out a cruel, mocking laugh from the corner of the room where she was handcuffed.

She proudly admitted that she had helped Daniel hide his second family from me for years.

Cole completely ignored her, turning his intense gaze back to my shocked face.

He told me that Daniel had borrowed heavily from a ruthless local crime syndicate to replace the corporate money I had moved.

Because I had drained his secret accounts, the syndicate was now actively hunting Daniel to collect their violent debt.

Cole warned me that Daniel would do absolutely anything to get that money back to save his second family.

I realized that keeping the money was no longer just about getting revenge on a terrible husband.

It was the only leverage I had to keep myself alive in a deadly game I had never asked to play.

I packed my laptop into my bag, ignoring the throbbing pain of the severe coffee burn on my neck.

I told Cole that we needed to pay Sarah a visit before Daniel could warn her about what was happening.

Cole shook his head grimly and pointed toward the flashing red and blue lights suddenly illuminating the motel parking lot.

He whispered that Daniel had not sent the police to arrest me for theft.

He had sent the corrupt officers on his syndicate payroll to make sure I never left this motel alive.
