Chapter 5 - The Unlikely Escape

The loud wail of police sirens echoed aggressively through the thin walls of the cheap motel room.

Heavy boots pounded against the exterior concrete walkway, moving purposefully toward our broken door.

Cole grabbed my arm, pulling me forcefully toward the small, frosted glass window in the cramped bathroom.

He smashed the glass with his elbow, ignoring the blood that instantly welled up on his heavy leather jacket.

We climbed through the jagged opening, dropping down into the dark, muddy alleyway behind the building.

I could hear the corrupt officers violently kicking the motel door entirely off its hinges.

Megan's muffled screams echoed into the night as the men likely realized she was not the target they were paid to eliminate.

We sprinted blindly through the freezing rain, jumping over rusted chain-link fences and dodging overflowing dumpsters.

Cole led me to a heavily tinted sedan parked entirely out of sight behind an abandoned diner.

We dove into the car, and he immediately sped away without turning on the headlights.

I leaned my head against the cold window, my entire body shaking uncontrollably from the freezing rain and pure terror.

I asked Cole how a simple corporate investigator ended up running from armed syndicate hitmen.

He glanced at me in the dark cabin, his expression incredibly tight and guarded.

Cole confessed that he did not actually work for Daniel's corporate employer at all.

He worked directly for the dangerous syndicate, and his actual job was to recover their missing money by any means necessary.

Before I could even process this horrifying betrayal, the car doors automatically locked with a loud, mechanical click.

Cole pulled a heavy black handgun from his waistband and placed it firmly onto his lap.

He calmly informed me that he was taking me directly to the cartel boss, and I was going to transfer every single penny.
