Chapter 2 - The Motel Sanctuary

I slammed my foot onto the gas pedal, frantically checking my rearview mirror for Daniel's familiar black truck.

The highway was crowded with evening traffic, making it impossible to tell if he was actually behind me.

I took three random exits in a row, weaving through suburban neighborhoods to lose anyone who might be tailing me.

After driving aimlessly for two hours, I finally pulled into the crumbling parking lot of a cheap roadside motel.

I paid for the room in cash, using a fake name to ensure there was no digital paper trail.

The motel room smelled strongly of stale cigarette smoke and cheap industrial bleach.

I locked the flimsy wooden door, engaged the rusty chain, and collapsed onto the edge of the lumpy mattress.

My skin still burned terribly, but the overwhelming adrenaline kept the physical pain at bay.

I pulled my laptop from my suitcase, connecting to the unsecured motel Wi-Fi to check the hidden trust fund.

The two million dollars rested safely in the account, entirely out of Daniel's greedy reach.

I planned to hand the money over to the federal authorities the next morning to secure my absolute immunity.

A sudden, aggressive pounding on my motel room door made me jump up from the bed.

I held my breath, slowly creeping toward the dusty peephole to see who was outside.

It was not Daniel standing under the flickering neon light of the motel walkway.

It was his sister, Megan, and she was gripping a heavy tire iron tightly in her right hand.
