Chapter 5 - The Phantom Death

I needed to make Matteo believe he had already won the war.

I ordered my loyal men to rig my decoy vehicle with heavy explosives.

I drove a different car to a hidden vantage point overlooking the Chicago river.

I remotely drove the decoy car onto the bridge and detonated the explosives.

A massive fireball illuminated the night sky, sending the burning wreckage crashing into the freezing water below.

The news stations immediately reported the tragic death of the infamous mafia boss Marco Vitelli.

I knew Matteo would be watching the news from his secure compound.

Now I was a ghost, completely free to operate in the shadows.

I equipped myself with tactical gear, a suppressed rifle, and enough ammunition to start a small war.

I infiltrated the abandoned warehouse district entirely on foot.

Matteo's guards were relaxed and celebrating the breaking news of my supposed demise.

I eliminated the perimeter guards silently, snapping necks and using my combat knife.

I slipped through a rusted ventilation shaft and dropped onto the main catwalk.

Matteo was standing on the factory floor, pouring a glass of expensive champagne.

Alina was still tied to the chair, weeping quietly at the news of my explosive death.

"You fought well, Alina, but the Vitelli empire officially belongs to me," Matteo declared proudly.

I raised my sniper rifle and aimed directly at Matteo's chest.

Before I could pull the trigger, the heavy warehouse doors swung violently open.

Matteo's men walked inside holding a terrified Sophia by her arms.
