Chapter 3 - The Tracker

I stared at the glowing screen in sheer disbelief.
Only Carlo knew about this location, and Carlo was completely loyal to my father.
I looked frantically around the small room for hidden cameras.
Then my eyes locked onto the shiny silver locket resting against Sophia's chest.
"Where did you get that necklace, Sophia?" I asked gently.
"Uncle Matteo gave it to Mommy a long time ago," she answered innocently.
I carefully unclasped the necklace from her tiny neck.
I pried the silver casing open with my pocket knife.
A microscopic GPS transmitter was blinking a steady red light inside the metal shell.
Matteo had been tracking my wife and daughter for six entire years.
I crushed the tracker beneath my heavy boot and tossed it out the window into a passing garbage truck.
"We have to leave right now," I told Sophia.
We moved across town to a high-rise hotel using a stolen car.
I left Sophia in the room with four of my most elite, uncompromised bodyguards.
It was time to pay a visit to the attorney who had arranged the orphanage paperwork.
I kicked down the door of Daniel Mercer's luxury penthouse an hour later.
I found the lawyer bleeding out on his expensive white carpet with a gunshot wound to his stomach.
Matteo was already cleaning up his loose ends.
I grabbed Mercer by his collar and lifted him off the floor.
"Where is my wife?" I demanded violently.

Mercer coughed up blood and smiled a weak, pathetic smile.
"She is still alive, Marco," he whispered with his dying breath.
