Chapter 7 - The Hidden Connection

The furious sounds of Victor and Malcolm shouting in the far distance were completely drowned out by the heavy pounding of Adrian's heart.

He stared intensely at the faded photograph, his brilliant mind struggling to comprehend exactly why a lowly maid possessed a picture of his late billionaire father.

"Where did you get this photograph?" Adrian demanded, his voice dropping to an intense, undeniably urgent whisper.

Grace quickly snatched the gold locket from his muddy palm, clutching it protectively and fiercely against her chest.

"That woman is my mother, Clara Miller," she answered, her eyes filling rapidly with a complex mixture of profound sadness and deep resentment.

Adrian gasped aloud, suddenly remembering the exact name of the beloved head housekeeper who had worked faithfully for his family twenty years ago.

Clara had been brutally fired and publicly disgraced after being falsely accused of stealing millions of dollars from the Whitmore corporate accounts.

"Malcolm purposely framed her for the massive embezzlement when I was just eight years old," Grace explained, hot tears finally spilling down her cheeks.

"I specifically took the maid job at this terrible house to find the hidden financial ledgers that prove my mother was entirely innocent all along."

Adrian realized with absolute, crushing horror that his family had completely destroyed the life of a incredibly loyal woman based entirely on Malcolm's lies.

The silly billionaire beggar act was officially over; he was now a furious man desperate to right the terrible, lingering wrongs of his family's past.

"I promise you right now, Grace, we are going to completely clear her name and take back every single thing they stole," Adrian vowed fiercely.

They navigated carefully through the dense, thorny woods until they finally reached the small, quiet police station located in the nearby suburban town.

Adrian pushed boldly through the heavy glass doors, marching straight up to the front desk with an aura of absolute authority.

"I am Adrian Whitmore, and I need to officially report an attempted murder and a case of massive corporate fraud," he declared loudly.

The bored desk sergeant looked up slowly from his computer screen, his expression remaining completely blank and deeply unbothered.

The heavy wooden door to the chief's private office swung open, and the local police chief stepped out casually holding a steaming cup of coffee.

"Well, well, Mr. Whitmore, I was reliably told you were currently having a severe mental breakdown," the chief said with a sinister, knowing smile.

The corrupt chief pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs and walked purposely toward them, completely ignoring their frantic pleas for help.

"Malcolm Reed specifically sends his regards, and he pays far better than this miserable city ever does," the corrupt chief whispered darkly.
