Chapter 6 - The Executive Betrayal

The cold, polished steel of Malcolm's pistol reflected the dim, flickering emergency lights of the greenhouse bunker.
Adrian stared directly at his most trusted friend, feeling a profound sense of emotional betrayal that hurt far worse than the physical wound on his head.
"You really should have just stayed comfortably in your penthouse, Adrian," Malcolm sighed softly, casually adjusting his expensive silk tie.
"I created the absolute perfect corporate narrative where you finally cracked under immense pressure and disappeared forever to live off the grid."
Victor stumbled blindly out of the thick cloud of fertilizer dust, coughing violently and raising his own weapon toward the pair.
"Just shoot them both right now, Malcolm, before the police outside start searching the underground grounds," Victor wheezed desperately.
Grace gripped the small kitchen knife tightly, flatly refusing to cower behind Adrian despite the completely overwhelming odds stacked against them.
"You will never get away with this insane plan," Grace said, her voice remaining completely and astonishingly steady.
Malcolm chuckled darkly, looking at the young, defiant maid with a look of total, condescending amusement.
"I already have gotten away with it, my dear, because the board of directors is voting to legally name me the new CEO in exactly two hours," Malcolm boasted proudly.
Adrian realized instantly that they needed a massive distraction right now, or they were both going to die anonymously in this dark basement.
He cleverly noticed the main water valve for the estate's industrial irrigation system located just inches from his left hand.
With a sudden, violent, and precise kick, Adrian shattered the rusty iron pipe connected directly to the high-pressure water valve.
A massive, explosive geyser of freezing, dirty water blasted directly into Malcolm's face, forcefully knocking the silver gun right out of his hand.
Adrian immediately grabbed Grace's hand tightly, and they bolted past the stunned, soaked executives, sprinting up the spiral metal staircase toward the gardens.
They ran recklessly into the thick, protective cover of the ancient forest completely surrounding the edge of the sprawling estate.
As they leaped frantically over a massive fallen log, the delicate chain of Grace's necklace snagged violently on a sharp tree branch and snapped.
A small, intricate gold locket fell heavily to the muddy ground, popping open perfectly upon impact with the earth.
Adrian stopped running to quickly pick it up, fully intending to hand it right back to her so they could keep moving.

But the bright moonlight suddenly illuminated the tiny, faded photograph carefully hidden inside the antique jewelry.
It was a picture of a beautiful, smiling woman standing affectionately next to Adrian's own deceased father, Arthur Whitmore.
