Chapter 6 - The Rival Boss

Evelyn was thrown roughly into the back of a dark, moving van alongside Adrian.
Their hands were bound tightly with thick zip ties, making escape completely impossible.
Adrian shifted closer to her in the darkness, whispering a sincere apology for dragging her into hell.
Evelyn leaned her head against his shoulder, realizing she could not truly hate him.
The van finally stopped, and they were dragged into a massive, abandoned shipping warehouse.
Bright floodlights blinded them as they were forced to their knees on the cold concrete.
A tall, elegant man stepped out of the deep shadows holding a silver walking cane.
Evelyn gasped in pure disbelief when she recognized the man's face.
It was Mr. Sterling, the highly respected director of the Hudson Historical Foundation where she worked.
Sterling smiled warmly, looking completely out of place in the violent criminal setting.
He revealed that the foundation was actually a massive money-laundering front for a rival syndicate.
He wanted a specific historical ledger that contained the banking codes to the entire Marino fortune.
Sterling knew Evelyn had recently archived that exact ledger in the foundation's underground vault.
He calmly demanded that she retrieve it for him immediately.
Evelyn bravely spat at his expensive shoes and refused to help a monster.
Sterling sighed in disappointment and snapped his fingers.

Two guards dragged a badly beaten Tessa into the bright light, holding a sharp knife to her throat.
Sterling calmly stated that if Evelyn did not get the ledger, Tessa would bleed to death right here.
