Chapter 2 - The Escape

Evelyn stumbled over the hem of her emerald gown as Adrian dragged her down a hidden servant corridor.
She could hear the terrifying sound of automatic gunfire echoing from the grand ballroom.
She desperately asked what was happening to all the innocent people inside.
Adrian coldly informed her that his security team was currently handling the threat.
He forcefully kicked open a heavy iron door leading out to the rainy driveway.
A sleek black sports car was waiting with the engine already running.
Adrian shoved her into the passenger seat and jumped behind the steering wheel.
He slammed his foot on the gas, tearing away from the estate just as another explosion rocked the night.
Evelyn trembled violently, wrapping her arms around her waist for comfort.
She demanded to know why heavily armed assassins would ever target a quiet archivist.
Adrian kept his eyes locked on the dark, wet road ahead.
He admitted that his enemies had recently discovered his only weakness.
Evelyn stared at him in pure shock, realizing he was talking about her.
She argued that they barely even knew each other.
Adrian confessed he had been secretly watching over her for the past three years.
Before Evelyn could process this massive invasion of privacy, her cell phone began to ring.
The caller ID brightly flashed Tessa's name.
Evelyn quickly answered, desperate to hear her best friend's comforting voice.

Instead, a raspy, unfamiliar male voice spoke through the speaker.
The man chuckled and said he had Tessa, and if Adrian did not surrender by midnight, she would burn.
