Evelyn held the weathered note with violently trembling hands.
She turned to Adrian and demanded to know how her father was involved with the mafia.
Adrian’s expression darkened, his jaw clenching with unspoken guilt.
He softly confessed that Evelyn's father was the former accountant for the Marino crime syndicate.
He had been murdered ten years ago because he tried to escape the life to protect Evelyn.
Evelyn felt her entire world shatter into a million irreparable pieces.
The man she was falling in love with belonged to the family that ruined her life.
She backed away from him, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
Adrian stepped forward, desperately pleading with her to understand he was trying to protect her now.
Evelyn shook her head and ran out of the apartment into the pouring rain.
She did not care where she was going, she just needed to escape his lies.
Adrian chased after her, calling her name into the dark street.
Suddenly, two unmarked black vans screeched to a halt, completely blocking the intersection.
A dozen armed men poured out of the vehicles, aiming laser sights directly at Evelyn's chest.
Adrian instantly dropped his weapon and raised his hands in absolute surrender.
He shouted that he would go quietly if they let Evelyn walk away completely unharmed.
