Chapter 8 - The Warehouse in Ohio

Meanwhile, Julian was thriving in Ohio.

Stripped of his designer suits and fancy cars, he spent his days in steel-toed boots, managing shipping lanes and supply chains. And for the first time in his life, he looked genuinely happy.

It was there that he met Maya. Maya was a shift supervisor. She drove a ten-year-old Honda, wore her hair in a messy bun, and had a laugh that could light up a dark room. She didn't know who Julian really was—he used his middle name, Thomas, at the warehouse.

She just knew him as the hardworking new guy who always bought the crew coffee on Fridays.

When Julian called me to tell me about her, his voice was different. There was a warmth and a respect that had never been there when he talked about Chloe.

"She's amazing, Mom. She works two jobs to pay for her little sister's medical bills, and she still volunteers at the animal shelter. She's real."

"Bring her home for Thanksgiving," I told him. "I'd love to meet her."
