Chapter 10 - Karma Served Cold

A year later.

Julian and Maya were married. It wasn't a sprawling gala at a historic mansion. It was a beautiful, intimate ceremony on a beach, barefoot, surrounded only by people who genuinely loved them. Sam was Julian's groomsman.

As for the Kensingtons?

Fate has a funny way of balancing the scales.

I had transformed the Kensington's former historic estate into a massive, heavily funded shelter and rehabilitation center for the homeless and battered women in Charleston. It was beautiful, clean, and provided absolute dignity to those who had none.

One rainy Tuesday, I was visiting the shelter to oversee a new wing. As I walked out to my car, I passed by a high-end luxury boutique across the street.

A woman was aggressively scrubbing the boutique's front windows in the pouring rain, wearing a cheap, unflattering uniform. A severe-looking manager was yelling at her from the doorway about missing a spot.

The woman turned her head to wipe her forehead, and our eyes met.

It was Chloe.

Her face was worn, her hands rough from labor. She stared at me, holding her squeegee, the rain soaking her hair just as the ice water had soaked mine all those months ago.

I didn't smile. I didn't mock her. I didn't pull out a phone to record her misery.

I simply opened my umbrella, gave her a polite, silent nod, and stepped into my waiting car.

Because beggars, after all, didn't belong in my world. But hard workers did. And it looked like Chloe was finally learning how to work.
