Chapter 6 - Julian's Test

Later that week, Julian came to my house. He looked exhausted.
"Mom," he sat on the couch, staring at his hands. "I need to apologize to you."
"You already have, Julian."
"No, I haven't. Not really." He looked up, his eyes filled with regret. "I let those people into my life. I let the glitz and the glamour blind me. I thought Chloe was just... ambitious. I didn't see the cruelty. I should have been paying closer attention to the woman I was going to marry."
I sat next to my son. "Julian, wealth is a magnifying glass. It takes whatever is inside a person and makes it bigger. Chloe was always cruel; the money just gave her the confidence to show it. But you need to learn how to judge character, not just net worth."
"I know," he said softly. "I want to resign as Vice President of Vance Global."
I raised an eyebrow. "Excuse me?"
"I don't deserve it. I was born into the corner office. I want to start at the bottom. I want to manage the logistics warehouse in Ohio. I want to work with the everyday people who actually keep this company running. I need to earn my way back up."

A profound sense of pride washed over me. The boy I had raised wasn't lost after all. He just needed a reality check.
"Your transfer to Ohio is approved," I smiled.
