Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The crystal tumbler slipped from Julian’s hand.
It hit the stone patio with a sharp, sickening crack, sending amber liquid and shards of glass exploding across the pristine Italian tiles. But Julian didn’t flinch. His eyes, wide with sheer, unadulterated horror, were glued to me.
"Mom?" he choked out. The word barely left his throat, yet in the dead silence of the courtyard, it sounded like a gunshot.
The collective gasp from the forty high-society guests sucked the oxygen out of the garden.
Chloe Kensington froze. The silver ice bucket slipped from her manicured fingers, clattering loudly onto the grass. She turned her head slowly, looking from Julian’s ghost-white face back down to me, a drenched, shivering woman in a thrift-store cardigan.
"Mom?" Chloe echoed, her voice trembling. A nervous, erratic giggle escaped her lips. "Julian, sweetie, what are you talking about? This is a homeless woman. She trespassed."
Julian didn’t look at her. He didn’t even look at the Kensingtons. He sprinted off the patio, his expensive oxfords splashing into the mud, and dropped to his knees right in front of me. His hands hovered over my soaked shoulders, terrified to touch me, terrified of what he was witnessing.
"Mom... Victoria... what happened?" Julian’s voice cracked. "Who did this to you?"
I slowly rose to my feet. The water dripped from my gray hair, pooling at my feet, but my posture was as straight as steel. I didn't look like a beggar anymore. I looked like Victoria Vance, founder and CEO of Vance Global, the woman who owned half the commercial real estate in the very city these people called home.
I turned my gaze to Chloe, who was now trembling so violently she looked like she might collapse in her couture gown.
"Your fiancée," I said, my voice cutting through the humid air like a scalpel. "She decided to give me a rather chilling welcome to the family."
"Julian, I didn't know!" Chloe shrieked, tears instantly ruining her flawless makeup. "She looked like a vagrant! She was hiding her face! It was a misunderstanding!"
"A misunderstanding?" I pulled my phone from the waterproof sleeve in my canvas bag and tapped the screen. The audio of Chloe’s vicious taunts played loud and clear for the entire garden to hear.

Julian stood up. The look in his eyes wasn't just anger; it was absolute disgust.
