Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

The horrific discovery of the black market organ vault sent absolute shockwaves through the entire state.

My parents' respected charity organization was nothing but an elaborate, sickening front for a global trafficking ring.

Michael had been using his bank position to launder the bloody profits, while Tyler was groomed to inherit the twisted family empire.

The entire family was immediately thrown into federal custody without the possibility of bail.

The news stations played the story on an endless loop, detailing the depth of their depravity and absolute corruption.

I sat in the hospital cafeteria, sipping terrible coffee, feeling the crushing weight of my family's true legacy bearing down on me.

I was completely cleared of all wrongdoing, and my frozen bank accounts were fully restored by the federal investigators.

We had enough money to cover Emily's medical bills, buy a new house, and start a completely fresh life far away from this poisoned town.

Lisa walked into the cafeteria, holding two steaming cups of tea, a bright, beautiful smile finally gracing her exhausted face.

"The doctors said Emily's hand is healing perfectly," Lisa announced, sitting across from me.

"She will need physical therapy, but she is going to have full mobility in her fingers."

I let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, thanking God that my daughter was finally safe and recovering.

We finished our drinks and took the elevator back up to the pediatric recovery ward to surprise Emily with the good news.

I imagined the joy on her face when we told her that Tyler and his father would never be able to hurt her again.

We walked down the quiet, sterile hallway, waving politely to the nurses stationed at the central desk.

I pushed open the heavy wooden door to Emily's private room, ready to embrace my brave little girl.

The hospital bed was completely empty.

The crisp white sheets were violently ripped away, and the IV stand was knocked over onto the linoleum floor.

The window overlooking the hospital parking lot was shattered, the cold night air blowing freely into the room.

I screamed her name in pure, blind panic, my voice echoing terribly down the empty corridor.

I rushed to the broken window and looked down into the dark, rain-soaked alleyway below.

A black, unmarked van was speeding aggressively away from the hospital loading dock, its tires screeching loudly on the wet pavement.

Tied to the fluttering curtain of the broken window was a small, handwritten note written on expensive, familiar stationary.

I ripped the paper down with trembling hands and read the elegant, terrifying cursive handwriting.

The note read: "You ruined our empire, Daniel, so we are taking our pound of flesh to cover our losses."
