Chapter 2 - The Erased Truth

The hospital waiting room smelled like bleach and stale coffee.
Emily had been in emergency surgery for two agonizing hours to pin her shattered bones back together.
Lisa sat beside me, staring at the floor while twisting her wedding ring in silence.
I kept refreshing my email, making sure the video file of Tyler's abuse was securely saved.
The heavy double doors of the waiting room swung open.
Michael walked in wearing a fresh shirt, flanked by a man in a highly expensive custom suit.
Sarah followed close behind them, holding Tyler by the shoulders as if he were the actual victim.
The man in the suit introduced himself as Marcus Vance, a high-powered defense attorney.
He did not offer his condolences or ask about my daughter's surgery.
He simply handed me a printed legal document demanding the immediate destruction of Tyler's cell phone.
Marcus claimed the phone was stolen by a minor and the video was obtained illegally.
I laughed in his face and told him the police were already on their way to collect the evidence.
Michael smirked and sat down in a plastic waiting chair.
He confidently told me that the police would not care about a two-year-old video of kids playing rough.
He said the only thing that mattered was the incident at the pool today.
I proudly informed him that my parents had high-definition security cameras pointed directly at the pool equipment hatch.
I knew those cameras would show Tyler deliberately crushing Emily's hand while she begged him to stop.
My cell phone rang in my pocket.
It was Detective Miller from the local precinct.
I answered the call, ready to tell him to seize my parents' security hard drive immediately.
The detective's voice sounded incredibly flat and exhausted.
He told me that my parents had just willingly handed over their entire security system to the police.
I looked at Michael, waiting for his arrogant smile to finally disappear.

Instead, the detective delivered a sentence that made the blood freeze in my veins.
He said the hard drive was completely wiped clean by a military-grade magnet just ten minutes before the officers arrived.
