Chapter 6 - The Hitman

The masked man advanced into the smoky room, the red laser sight of his pistol dancing across my shirt.
I grabbed the heavy metal chair I had been sitting on and hurled it directly at his head.
The chair struck his shoulder, throwing his aim off just as a suppressed gunshot shattered the glass mirror behind me.
I lunged forward, tackling the intruder to the hard concrete floor.
We wrestled violently in the darkness, the acrid smoke burning my lungs and blinding my eyes.
He swung the butt of the pistol, catching me hard on the jaw, but adrenaline fueled my desperate survival instinct.
I managed to pry the weapon from his gloved hands and kicked it far across the room.
The detective rushed back into the room with a heavy flashlight, illuminating the chaotic struggle.
He drew his service weapon and ordered the masked man to freeze immediately.
The intruder surrendered, raising his hands as the detective violently secured him in steel handcuffs.
The detective ripped the ski mask off the man's face, revealing a familiar, terrifying profile.
It was the head football coach from Tyler's high school, the same man Michael had been blackmailing with the cash envelopes.
The coach was hyperventilating, begging us to understand that he had absolutely no choice.
He confessed that Michael had called him twenty minutes ago with a deadly ultimatum.
Michael had threatened to release the bribery videos to the press unless the coach broke into the precinct and eliminated me permanently.
The detective dragged the sobbing coach out of the burning building and into the chaotic, flashing lights of the parking lot.
I was finally cleared of all charges, recognized officially as the victim of a massive, coordinated conspiracy.
I borrowed a police cruiser and sped toward the hospital to reunite with my family.
When I arrived at Emily's room, she was awake, groggy from the painkillers, but managing a small, beautiful smile.
Lisa threw her arms around my neck, sobbing tears of absolute relief that our nightmare was turning around.
The social workers had officially revoked the removal order and issued emergency restraining orders against Michael, Sarah, and my parents.
I sat on the edge of Emily's bed, gently kissing her bandaged forehead and promising her that Tyler would never hurt her again.
My cell phone buzzed in my pocket with a notification from my bank.
I pulled it out to check the message, expecting a routine alert about my recent legal fees.
