Chapter 1 - The First Video

I stared at the glowing screen of the cell phone in little Mason’s trembling hands.

The video was dated twenty-two months ago.

It showed Emily sitting on a park bench holding a stuffed rabbit.

Tyler walked into the frame and casually twisted her wrist until she dropped the toy into the mud.

But that was not the worst part of the recording.

From behind the camera, Michael’s voice echoed clearly.

He was telling his son to make sure there were no visible bruises.

He was coaching a thirteen-year-old boy on how to inflict pain without leaving legal evidence.

I felt a cold, murderous rage replace the panic in my chest.

Michael groaned from the wet concrete where I had dropped him.

He saw the phone in Mason’s hand and his eyes went wide with sheer terror.

He lunged forward to snatch the device away from the terrified little boy.

I kicked Michael squarely in the chest, sending him sliding backward into the pool chairs.

I took the phone from Mason and immediately forwarded the video to my own email.

The wail of the ambulance sirens finally pierced through the chaotic noise of the backyard.

Paramedics rushed through the side gate with a medical gurney.

They took one look at Emily’s mangled fingers and immediately called for strong pain medication.

Lisa held our daughter’s uninjured hand, her face completely pale with shock.

My mother grabbed my arm, begging me not to show the paramedics the video.

She said I was going to destroy our family over a childish mistake.

I looked at the woman who raised me and realized she had chosen her golden grandchild over my daughter's safety.

I handed the phone directly to the lead paramedic and told him it was a deliberate assault.

Michael scrambled to his feet, pulling out his own cell phone with bloody fingers.

He dialed a number and looked at me with a terrifying, confident smile.

He said he was calling his lawyer, and that by tomorrow, I would be the one going to prison.
