Chapter 4 - The False Narrative

The cold steel of the handcuffs bit into my wrists as the officers marched me through the hospital lobby.
Lisa screamed my name, trying to push past the nurses to reach me.
I yelled back to her, begging her to check her email and secure the files I had just found.
Michael stood near the sliding glass doors, holding a fresh bandage over his perfectly uninjured chest.
He had fabricated a story that I brutally attacked him unprovoked out of sheer jealousy.
Sarah was giving a tearful statement to another officer, claiming I had always been violently unstable.
I was shoved into the back of a police cruiser and driven to the county jail like a common criminal.
The hours ticked by in a damp, concrete holding cell while I prayed for my daughter's safety.
I knew that as long as I was locked in a cage, Michael had full control over the narrative.
Finally, the heavy iron door clanked open and a guard called my name.
I was led into a small interrogation room where an exhausted detective was waiting with a thick file.
He asked me why I had viciously attacked a respected local businessman at a family barbecue.
I calmly explained the truth about Emily's shattered hand and Tyler's history of sadistic abuse.
The detective sighed and opened the manila folder on the metal table.
He pulled out a signed, official statement from Child Protective Services.
He told me that my parents had filed an emergency welfare check against me while I was sitting in this cell.
My parents claimed that I was the one who actually broke Emily's hand in a fit of rage.
They swore under oath that Michael had only stepped in to protect the child from my violent outburst.
Because of my parents' respected status in the community, the judge had already signed the preliminary order.

The detective looked me dead in the eye and delivered the fatal blow.
He said CPS was currently at the hospital to take Emily into emergency state custody the moment she woke up from surgery.
