Chapter 8 - The Bridge

The tires squealed as I drifted the car onto the main highway leading toward the suspension bridge.
Vance was on the phone with the police dispatcher, desperately coordinating a blockade.
The wind howled through the broken windshield, whipping my hair across my face, but I did not blink.
I saw the massive steel cables of the bridge looming in the distance, illuminated by yellow streetlights.
Halfway across the span, a silver sedan was parked diagonally, blocking the right lane.
I slammed on the brakes, stopping Vance’s car fifty feet away from the sedan.
I jumped out and ran toward the edge of the bridge, my heart pounding in my throat.
The fiancé was standing on the narrow maintenance walkway on the other side of the safety railing.
He was holding Mia by her tiny jacket, dangling her over the terrifying, black drop to the river.
Mia was finally awake, crying weakly and reaching her little arms out toward the road.
I stopped moving and held both of my hands up, begging him to tell me what he wanted.
He looked at me with wild, bloodshot eyes, screaming that Julian had promised him five million dollars for his medical help.
Since the FBI froze the accounts, he was a dead man walking, and he wanted me to suffer with him.
I told him I would sign over every single asset I owned, my house, my car, my entire future.
He laughed bitterly and said my assets were not enough to cover the interest on his debt.
He loosened his grip on Mia’s jacket, and she slipped an inch lower toward the deadly drop.
I screamed, falling to my knees on the rough asphalt and begging God for a miracle.
Suddenly, a massive spotlight from a police helicopter pierced the darkness, blinding the fiancé completely.
He flinched, raising one hand to shield his eyes from the intense, heavenly glare.
In that split second, Vance charged forward with the speed of a linebacker and vaulted entirely over the safety railing.
Vance slammed his body into the fiancé, pinning him violently against the steel support beams.
May you like
The fiancé lost his grip entirely, and Mia began to fall toward the rushing river below.
Without thinking, I threw myself over the railing and dove into the empty air after my baby.
