Chapter 2 - The Hospital Trap

The cold metal of the handcuffs bit into my wrists as the officer pushed me toward the squad car.
I screamed that they were making a mistake and begged him to listen to the dispatcher's recording.
The officer shook his head, holding up my phone so I could see the screen.
The text message was a forged confession sent from an email address registered in my name, detailing how I planned to poison Mia.
My sister stood on the porch, hiding a vicious smirk behind her hand while comforting my crying niece.
They had planned this meticulously, setting me up to take the fall if their dumpster scheme was ever discovered.
As the officer forced me into the backseat, a sleek black sports car completely blocked the driveway.
A man in a tailored suit stepped out, holding a thick leather briefcase.
It was Vance, the ruthless defense attorney I had hired during my brutal divorce, who also happened to be my oldest friend.
He marched straight up to the officer and presented an emergency court injunction.
Vance demanded my immediate release, citing illegal detention based on unverified digital evidence.
The officer hesitated, but Vance’s legal threats were aggressive enough to make him unlock my handcuffs.
I did not wait for an apology, I just jumped into Vance’s car and yelled at him to drive to the hospital.
During the ride, Vance revealed that he had been monitoring my family's financial accounts as part of my ongoing custody battle.
He told me that my parents and my sister had secretly transferred millions of dollars into offshore accounts just hours before the party.
They were liquidating everything, preparing to flee the country.
We arrived at the emergency room, and I sprinted through the automatic doors toward the pediatric ward.
A nurse recognized me and immediately blocked my path with a sympathetic but firm look.
She told me that Mia was stabilized but still in a deep coma from a massive overdose of a restricted surgical sedative.
Before I could ask to see her, the doors to the intensive care unit swung open.
Stepping out of the room was my ex-husband, Julian, holding a stack of legal documents.

He smiled an evil, victorious smile and thanked me for proving I was an unfit mother.
He held up a paper signed by a judge, granting him full and immediate legal custody of Mia.
