Chapter 1 - The Shattered Facade

The piercing sound of sirens shattered the tense silence in the driveway.

My sister slowly dropped her hand from my niece’s shoulder as the flashing red lights painted her face in a sinister glow.

She looked terrified, but I knew it was not out of concern for my two-year-old daughter.

She was only terrified of being caught.

The paramedics rushed past the stunned party guests and gently took my pale, unconscious Mia from my trembling arms.

I tried to climb into the back of the ambulance with her, but a heavy hand grabbed my shoulder.

It was my father, his grip painfully tight as he tried to pull me away from the doors.

He whispered that if I got in that vehicle, he would make sure I never saw a dime of the family inheritance.

I turned around and slapped him across the face so hard that his glasses flew off into the grass.

The entire engagement party gasped in unison, but I did not care about their artificial outrage.

A police officer stepped between us, demanding to know what was going on.

My mother instantly began crying fake tears, pointing a shaking finger directly at my chest.

She told the officer that I was severely mentally unstable and that I had drugged my own child for attention.

My sister eagerly chimed in, claiming she had seen me pouring medicine into Mia’s juice box earlier that afternoon.

The officer looked at me with immediate suspicion and asked me to step away from the ambulance.

The paramedic slammed the doors shut, and the vehicle sped off toward the hospital without me.

I pulled out my phone, realizing I had left the emergency dispatcher on speakerphone this entire time.

I held the device up to the officer and told him that the 911 dispatch had recorded everything my parents said by the dumpster.

The officer’s expression hardened as he took the phone to verify my claim.

My mother and sister exchanged a look of pure, unadulterated panic.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed in the officer's hand with an incoming text message from an unknown number.

The officer looked at the screen, his eyes widening in shock before he looked back up at me.

He reached for his handcuffs and told me I was under arrest for the attempted murder of my daughter.
