Chapter 5 - The Chase

Vance slammed his foot on the gas pedal, ignoring every red light on the empty city streets.
The engine roared as we pushed the car to its absolute limits, racing against a ticking clock.
I stared blindly out the window, my heart pounding so hard it hurt my ribs.
I pictured Mia’s pale face in that dumpster and swore to myself that I would burn the world down to save her.
We merged onto the highway, heading straight for the private aviation terminal on the edge of town.
Suddenly, a massive black SUV violently swerved into our lane, nearly running us off the road.
I screamed as Vance gripped the steering wheel, fighting to keep the car steady.
The SUV matched our speed, and the tinted passenger window slowly rolled down.
My father was sitting in the passenger seat, holding a heavy steel tire iron.
He threw the metal bar directly at our windshield, shattering the glass into a spiderweb of cracks.
He yelled that I was ruining the family’s one chance at true wealth and told us to pull over.
Vance cursed loudly and slammed his brakes, causing my father’s SUV to speed ahead.
Then, Vance aggressively shifted gears and rammed the front of our car into the back corner of their vehicle.
The impact spun the heavy SUV out of control, sending it crashing into the highway guardrail.
We did not stop to see if my father was injured.
We kept driving until the chain-link fences of the private airfield finally came into view.
A massive private jet was sitting on the runway, its engines already whining as it prepared for takeoff.
Julian’s private ambulance was parked near the boarding stairs, its rear doors wide open.
Vance drove our battered car straight through the security gate, ignoring the shouting guards.
We screeched to a halt near the tail of the plane, and I threw my door open before we even stopped.
I ran toward the stairs, screaming Mia’s name over the deafening roar of the jet engines.
My sister stepped out onto the top of the boarding stairs, looking down at me with a twisted smile.
She held up a small remote control with a single red button on it.
May you like
She casually mentioned that she had placed a small explosive charge under the ambulance’s fuel tank.
She told me that if I took one more step, she would press the button and erase her mistake entirely.
