Chapter 7 - The Mastermind

Panic ripped through my chest as I tore the cabin apart looking for my daughter.
Julian cowered against the wall, holding his hands up in surrender as I grabbed him by his expensive collar.
I screamed in his face, demanding to know where he had hidden my child.
Julian started crying, pathetically admitting that he had never taken Mia from the hospital at all.
He confessed that the private ambulance transport was a decoy meant to distract me.
He said the entire plan had been orchestrated by someone else, and he was only supposed to be the legal face of the operation.
I shoved him to the floor and dragged my sister into the cabin by her hair.
She was laughing, a hysterical and completely unhinged sound that echoed in the luxurious space.
She admitted that she hated me because I had always been the golden child until I ruined it by marrying Julian.
She told me that she wanted the trust fund money for her own daughter, Chloe, to ensure they never had to struggle again.
But she swore she did not know where Mia was, claiming the mastermind had taken her.
Vance ran up the stairs, holding his phone out to me with a grim expression.
He had tracked the GPS on the doctor’s badge who signed Mia’s release forms at the hospital.
The doctor was the fiancé of my niece, the man whose engagement we had been celebrating when this nightmare began.
He had used the chaos of the fake ambulance to quietly carry Mia out the back doors of the hospital.
Vance showed me a live traffic camera feed on his phone.
The fiancé’s car was parked on the edge of a high bridge overlooking the city’s deepest river.
He was standing outside the vehicle, holding Mia dangerously close to the concrete edge.
My sister stopped laughing and turned pale, realizing her future son-in-law was completely out of his mind.
She whispered that he owed millions to a violent loan shark and needed the trust fund to save his own life.
If he could not get the money tonight, he was going to eliminate the heir permanently.
I turned and sprinted back down the stairs, ignoring the approaching wail of police sirens.

I jumped into Vance’s car and slammed the gas pedal to the floor.
I had exactly ten minutes to reach that bridge before my daughter was thrown into the dark water.
