Chapter 3 - The Missing Will

Julian’s arrogant laughter echoed down the sterile hospital hallway.
I lunged at him, but Vance quickly wrapped his arms around my waist to pull me back.
Vance whispered in my ear that assaulting Julian would guarantee I would never see Mia again.
Julian adjusted his expensive tie and proudly announced that the hospital staff was preparing Mia for a private medical transfer.
He claimed he was taking her to an exclusive rehabilitation clinic in Switzerland.
I knew he was lying, because Julian had never cared about Mia for a single day of her life.
He was using her as a pawn, and my twisted family had clearly partnered with him.
I demanded to know how he got a judge to sign custody papers on a Sunday evening.
Julian leaned in close, his breath smelling of expensive scotch, and whispered that money could buy anything.
He turned and walked back into the intensive care unit, locking the heavy doors behind him.
I collapsed into one of the waiting room chairs, sobbing helplessly into my hands.
Vance knelt beside me and pulled a heavily encrypted tablet out of his briefcase.
He told me there was only one reason Julian and my family would team up to steal Mia.
Vance pulled up a confidential document he had hacked from Julian’s late father’s estate.
Julian’s billionaire father had despised Julian’s cruel nature and completely cut him out of the will.
Instead, the old man had left his entire fifty-million-dollar fortune in a trust fund solely for Mia.
The only way Julian could access the money was if he became Mia’s sole legal guardian.
My family had thrown my baby in a dumpster to ensure she missed a mandatory welfare check, giving Julian the window he needed.
I wiped my tears, a burning rage replacing every ounce of my despair.
I told Vance we needed to find the original will to prove Julian’s custody claim was fraudulent.
Vance nodded, stating that my sister kept a hidden safe inside her home office.
We left the hospital and drove recklessly back to my sister’s neighborhood under the cover of darkness.
We broke through the back window of her house, the glass shattering quietly onto the carpet.
I found the hidden safe behind a large painting in the office, but the digital keypad was locked.

Suddenly, the heavy metal door of the office clicked shut, locking us inside from the outside.
A thick, sweet-smelling smoke began pouring into the room through the air vents.
