Chapter 5 - The Empty House

I stood frozen in the doorway of the nursery, my mind struggling to process the devastating absence of my children.
The pale blue crib was completely empty, the soft blankets carelessly tossed onto the hardwood floor.
I sprinted frantically down the hallway, screaming the names of my three-year-old son and my newborn daughter.
I checked every single bedroom, the master bathroom, and even the dark storage closets.
The entire massive house was completely dead and terrifyingly silent.
Our live-in nanny, a quiet young woman named Chloe, was also nowhere to be found.
I pulled out my phone with violently shaking hands and dialed Chloe's number.
The automated voice calmly informed me that the cellular number had been permanently disconnected.
Panic clawed at my throat as I ran downstairs to the large kitchen to search for any clues.
Sitting perfectly centered on the marble kitchen island was a heavy, cream-colored envelope.
My name was written across the front in an elegant, old-fashioned cursive script that I recognized immediately.
It was the unmistakable handwriting of Eleanor, Julian's wealthy and ruthless mother.
I ripped the thick envelope open, tearing the expensive paper in my desperate haste.
The letter was short, cold, and dripping with venomous judgment.
Eleanor wrote that she had witnessed my unhinged, disgraceful public stunt at the party.
She stated that a woman capable of destroying her own husband was entirely unfit to raise innocent children.
She proudly declared that she had taken her grandchildren to a secure, undisclosed location to protect them from my toxic influence.
She also warned me that she had already hired the most aggressive family lawyers in the state to strip me of my maternal rights permanently.
I dropped the heavy paper onto the floor, struggling to pull air into my constricting lungs.
Eleanor was a powerful billionaire with endless connections, private jets, and offshore properties.
If she decided to hide my children, she had the resources to make them disappear from the country forever.
I heard the heavy footsteps of the federal agents walking into my kitchen.
They coldly informed me that they had a warrant to seize all my electronic devices and travel documents immediately.
I was completely trapped, stripped of my babies, facing federal prison, and entirely alone.

My phone suddenly buzzed with an incoming text message from an unknown international number.
The message simply read that my children were boarding a private flight in exactly two hours.
