Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

The courtroom erupted into absolute chaos.
The corrupt judge dropped his gavel, his face draining of all color as he stared at the financial documents in the surgeon's hands.
Caroline’s expensive lawyer immediately stood up, packed his briefcase, and walked away from her table without saying a single word.
My father jumped out of his seat and sprinted toward the exit, but two large bailiffs blocked his path.
"Play the tape," a senior clerk of the court demanded, overriding the paralyzed judge.
I ripped the seam of the bunny open, pulled out the small digital recorder, and pressed the play button, holding it close to the microphone on the table.
The crisp, clear audio filled the enormous room.
Everyone heard Caroline’s mocking voice telling Mia to stop acting broken.
They heard Mia pleading for her not to touch the brace.
They heard the violent, sickening sound of Velcro tearing, followed instantly by Mia’s terrified scream as she hit the hardwood floor.
And then, the most damning sound of all echoed through the speakers.
My aunt laughed, Mark snorted, and my father told me not to be so sensitive.
The gallery sat in stunned, horrified silence.
My mother buried her face in her hands, weeping loudly, knowing her pristine social life was over forever.
The senior clerk picked up a phone on his desk and dialed a number.
"Send the state police to Courtroom 302 immediately," the clerk ordered.
An alternate judge was brought in from the chambers next door to take over the compromised proceedings.
"David Miller is granted full, unconditional custody of his daughter, and permanent restraining orders are issued against Arthur, Diane, and Caroline Miller," the new judge declared firmly.
"Furthermore, I am issuing immediate arrest warrants for assault, child endangerment, and judicial bribery."
The police flooded into the room, slapping handcuffs on my screaming parents.
I looked over at the plaintiff's table, feeling a sudden, icy knot form in my stomach.
Caroline’s chair was empty.
In the chaos of the audio playing and my parents being arrested, she had slipped out the side door.
I grabbed Doctor Caldwell by the shoulder in sheer panic.
"She is gone," I yelled over the noise.
Doctor Caldwell looked at his phone, his face turning pale.

"The hospital just issued a Code Pink," he said, his voice trembling.
"Someone matching Caroline's description just bypassed security on the pediatric surgical floor."
