Chapter 3 - The False Accusation

The two police officers instantly drew their tasers and aimed them at my chest.

"Put the child down and step back with your hands in the air!" the taller officer commanded.

I froze in pure disbelief.

"She is lying, my sister is the one who hurt her!" I yelled desperately.

"He pushed her to the ground because she wouldn't stop crying!" my mother wailed, joining in on the monstrous lie.

Doctor Caldwell stepped between me and the officers, holding his hands up defensively.

"Officers, I am Doctor Caldwell, this child's orthopedic surgeon," he said with steady authority.

"I witnessed the aunt violently remove the medical device from this child's leg."

The officers hesitated, looking back and forth between the weeping women and the calm doctor.

"We have three witnesses saying the father did it," the second officer noted, gesturing toward my parents and sister.

Paramedics rushed through the open door with a stretcher, cutting the argument short.

Doctor Caldwell immediately directed the medics to Mia, explaining the delicate nature of her surgical graft.

"Daddy, please don't let them take me alone!" Mia cried as they lifted her onto the stretcher.

"I will ride in the ambulance with her, David," Doctor Caldwell promised, giving me a reassuring nod.

"I won't let anyone hurt her."

I watched helplessly as they wheeled my crying daughter out into the cold night air.

Before I could follow them, rough hands grabbed my shoulders and spun me around.

The tall officer slammed me against the wall and pulled my arms behind my back.

"David Miller, you are being detained on suspicion of child abuse," the officer recited as cold steel cuffs clamped around my wrists.

"You have to look at the brace, her fingerprints are all over it!" I pleaded as they dragged me outside.

My father stood on the porch, watching me being shoved into the back of a police cruiser.

He didn't look angry anymore.

He just looked incredibly relieved that his own reputation was safe.

The cruiser doors slammed shut, plunging me into the dark, suffocating back seat.

An hour later, I was sitting in a gray interrogation room at the precinct, staring at a metal table.

A weary-looking detective walked in and tossed a thick folder onto the table.

"Your family is pressing full charges against you, David," the detective said with a sigh.

"But that's not the worst of it."

The detective leaned forward, sliding a photograph of Mia's broken leg brace across the table.

"We inspected the brace at the hospital."

"Someone didn't just rip the straps off."

"Someone used a screwdriver to loosen the hinges before the party even started."
