Chapter 5 - The Medical Verdict

The heavy metal door of the holding cell clanged open at three in the morning.

A sleepy guard handed me my personal belongings in a clear plastic bag.

"Your bail was posted, Miller," the guard grunted, pointing toward the exit.

I walked into the bright fluorescent lights of the precinct lobby and saw Doctor Caldwell waiting for me.

He looked exhausted, still wearing his dark winter coat over his scrubs.

"Thank you," I breathed, grabbing his hand and shaking it firmly.

"How is she?"

Doctor Caldwell's expression was grim as he led me out to his car in the freezing rain.

"She is in emergency surgery right now," he explained as we got into the vehicle.

"The damage to the graft was catastrophic."

"If we cannot stabilize the blood flow to the lower tissue, she might lose the leg below the knee."

I gripped the dashboard, trying to stop the violent shaking that took over my body.

"We have to prove what Caroline did," I said, my voice barely a whisper.

"I told the police about the sabotage, but it is my word against three wealthy, respected citizens," Doctor Caldwell replied in frustration.

"They have already hired a high-powered defense attorney to bury this."

I turned to him, the plan crystallizing in my desperate mind.

"Mia has a stuffed bunny that she dropped on the floor when she fell."

"There is a voice recorder sewn inside the chest."

Doctor Caldwell’s eyes widened in the dark cabin of the car.

"It will have the entire conversation, the sound of the Velcro tearing, and them laughing at her," I explained.

"Where is the bunny now?" he asked, putting the car in gear.

"It is still at my parents' house," I said.

We pulled up to the hospital entrance just as the sun began to peek over the city skyline.

I sprinted through the sliding glass doors, desperate to be near the surgical wing.

But as I stepped out of the elevator on the fourth floor, two private security guards blocked my path.

Standing behind them, sipping a cup of expensive coffee, was Caroline.

She held up a crisp white legal document with a smug, victorious smile.

"Emergency protective order, David," Caroline sneered.

"If you step within one hundred feet of that operating room, you go straight back to jail."
