Chapter 10 - The Final Sentence

Doctor Caldwell and I sprinted out of the courthouse and threw ourselves into the back of a waiting police cruiser.

The sirens screamed through the city as the officer drove wildly toward the hospital, weaving through the morning traffic.

We reached the pediatric wing just as the elevator doors opened, revealing total chaos among the nursing staff.

I ran down the hallway and burst into Mia's recovery room, my heart stopping in my chest.

Caroline was standing by the bed, frantically trying to unhook the IV lines from Mia's sleeping arm.

"Get your hands off my daughter!" I roared, tackling my sister away from the bed.

Caroline screamed and clawed at my face, but two police officers rushed into the room and pinned her to the floor.

"You ruined my life!" Caroline shrieked like a wild animal as the heavy steel cuffs clicked around her wrists.

I ignored her completely, falling to my knees beside Mia's bed and gently holding her tiny, warm hand.

Doctor Caldwell rushed in, checking the monitors and letting out a massive sigh of relief.

"The surgery was a complete success, David," he smiled warmly, resting a hand on my shoulder.

"The graft held perfectly, and she is going to heal beautifully."

Mia slowly opened her eyes, blinking against the bright lights, and gave me the sweetest, sleepiest smile.

"Hi, Daddy," she whispered, safe and finally free from the monsters masquerading as a family.

One month later, my family was in prison, and Mia was walking around our new apartment without any pain.

We were finally happy, living a quiet life filled with laughter that was actually kind.

I was unpacking the last of her hospital bags when I found a thick, unmarked envelope tucked inside a side pocket.

Inside were ten high-resolution photographs showing Doctor Caldwell handing a large briefcase full of cash to the corrupt judge in a dark parking lot.

Attached to the photos was a handwritten note in perfectly neat handwriting.

"I made sure the judge ruled in your favor, David, but now you owe us both."
