Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Witness

The room went silent so fast it felt like the air had been ripped right out of it.

Doctor Caldwell stood in the doorway with his dark winter coat still on.

His eyes were locked like laser beams on Caroline’s fingers.

The pink straps of my daughter’s leg brace were still dangling from her perfectly manicured hand.

No one in my family knew who this tall, imposing man was.

They just stared at him like he was a lost delivery driver who had stumbled into the wrong house.

But I knew exactly who he was.

He was the brilliant surgeon who had spent six grueling hours in an operating room trying to give my little girl a normal life.

Caroline let out a nervous, high-pitched laugh, trying to regain control of her twisted little stage.

"Excuse me, but this is a private family party," she said with a fake, sugary smile.

Doctor Caldwell ignored her completely.

He walked straight across the dining room.

His heavy leather boots thudded against the hardwood floor with terrifying purpose.

My father opened his mouth to shout something, but the pure rage radiating from the doctor's face stopped him cold.

Doctor Caldwell dropped to his knees right beside me.

He gently pushed my shaking hands aside and looked at Mia, who was still sobbing on the floor.

"Mia, sweetheart, I need you to tell me exactly where it hurts," he said softly.

Mia pointed to the side of her right knee with a trembling little finger.

Doctor Caldwell’s jaw tightened as he gently touched the skin around the surgical site.

"You ripped the stabilizer entirely off the hinge," he said, not looking up.

"It was just a joke," Caroline scoffed, rolling her eyes and sipping her wine.

Doctor Caldwell slowly stood up and turned to face my sister.

"You may have just severed the graft that took months to heal," he said, his voice deadly quiet.

My mother gasped, finally realizing the severity of what was happening.

"I am calling an ambulance right now," Doctor Caldwell announced, pulling his phone from his pocket.

My father suddenly stepped forward, his face turning bright red with anger.

"You absolutely will not call an ambulance to my house and give the neighbors something to gossip about!" my father yelled.

He stormed over to the front door and locked the deadbolt with a loud click.

He pulled the keys out of the lock and shoved them into his pocket.

"Nobody is leaving this house until we sit down and talk about this like a normal family," my father demanded.

Doctor Caldwell looked at my father with a chilling, calm expression.

"I am a mandated reporter, sir, and I am telling you that this child is leaving with me right now," Doctor Caldwell warned.

My brother Mark suddenly stood up from the table and pulled a hunting knife from his belt.

"You heard my dad, doctor," Mark said, stepping between us and the door.
