Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

I drove the federal vehicle like a madman through the dark, winding country roads.

I shattered every speed limit, praying constantly that I would not be too late to save her.

I skidded onto Diane’s street and saw the front door of the house completely smashed open.

I drew my military sidearm and moved silently through the dark, empty living room.

I heard the sound of shattering glass coming from the upstairs hallway.

I took the stairs two at a time, keeping my weapon raised and my breathing perfectly controlled.

I found Wade cornering my daughter in the narrow space of the upstairs bathroom.

Wade looked completely deranged, his jaw still wired shut and his eyes swollen with purple bruises.

He was holding a long kitchen knife and threatening to make Ava pay for what she did to him.

Ava was terrified, but she stood her ground holding a heavy metal baseball bat ready to swing.

“Drop the knife right now, Wade, or I will end you,” I commanded in a booming voice.

Wade spun around, his eyes wide with manic rage when he saw me standing in the doorway.

He realized he was completely trapped and had absolutely nothing left to lose.

Instead of dropping the weapon, Wade screamed and lunged violently toward my daughter.

I did not hesitate for a single fraction of a second.

I fired my weapon twice, hitting Wade squarely in his right shoulder to stop his momentum.

Wade collapsed backward, dropping the knife and clutching his bleeding chest in agony.

But one of my bullets had passed cleanly through his shoulder and struck the wall behind him.

A loud hissing sound immediately filled the bathroom as the bullet ruptured a hidden natural gas pipe.

A spark from the shattered bathroom light fixture instantly ignited the leaking gas.

A massive wall of bright orange fire exploded between me and the hallway exit.
