Chapter 10 - The Ashes of the Past

I grabbed Ava tightly by her waist and dragged Wade’s bleeding body out of the burning bathroom.

We stumbled through the thick, choking smoke and made it down the stairs just as the roof began to collapse.

I carried my daughter out onto the front lawn and collapsed onto the cool grass.

Fire trucks arrived moments later, completely flooding the blazing house with massive hoses.

Wade was loaded into an ambulance under heavy federal guard, guaranteed to survive only to face his horrific crimes.

Two months slowly passed as the dust finally settled on our family's darkest nightmare.

Wade, Diane, and Wade’s parents were all convicted in federal court without any chance of parole.

The corrupt local police department was completely dismantled by a sweeping federal investigation.

The judge granted me full, uncontested custody of both Ava and Tommy permanently.

I retired from active duty and bought a beautiful, quiet house sitting right on the edge of a peaceful lake.

The kids were finally smiling again, slowly healing from their trauma, and feeling genuinely safe.

We spent our weekends fishing, watching movies, and simply enjoying the beautiful gift of a normal life.

It was a perfectly happy ending for a family that had survived the absolute worst of humanity.

One sunny afternoon, I walked down to the end of the driveway to check the daily mail.

I found a plain brown box sitting inside the mailbox with absolutely no return address on the label.

Inside the box was a perfectly folded white wedding ribbon and a photograph of Tommy sleeping in his new bedroom, taken from inside our new house.

A handwritten note rested at the bottom that read: "Wade was just the local broker, and the real buyers always collect their merchandise."
