Chapter 7 - The Mother's Betrayal

Diane forced me inside the cabin at gunpoint and locked the heavy door behind us.

Wade’s father smiled arrogantly when he saw me stumble into the brightly lit room.

Tommy screamed for me, but the older man covered my son’s mouth with his large hand.

I glared at Diane and demanded to know why she was helping these monsters destroy our family.

Diane kept her gun leveled at my chest and casually leaned against the wooden wall.

“I was drowning in half a million dollars of illegal gambling debt before I met Wade,” Diane confessed coldly.

She explained that dangerous loan sharks had threatened to break her legs if she did not pay them back.

Wade’s family offered to completely erase her massive debt with a single phone call.

The only condition was that Diane had to turn a blind eye to Wade’s sick disciplinary methods.

She had literally sold her children’s safety to buy herself a clean financial slate.

“You are a disgusting, pathetic excuse for a mother,” I spat at her.

Wade’s father chuckled and tightened his grip on my terrified son’s shoulder.

“Your moral outrage is very entertaining, soldier, but it will not save you,” the judge mocked.

He explained that my body would vanish into the deep swamp tonight, just like the previous boy.

They planned to tell the police that I had broken the restraining order and fled the state with Tommy.

I silently calculated the distance between myself and Diane’s weapon, waiting for a single moment of distraction.

I knew I only had one chance to disarm her before she pulled the trigger.

The distant sound of heavy helicopter rotors suddenly shattered the quiet swamp air.

The massive front gate of the compound was violently blown completely off its hinges by an explosive charge.

Dozens of federal tactical agents swarmed the courtyard, shining blinding laser sights through every window of the cabin.

My military lawyer had successfully delivered the whistleblower's hard drive to the FBI.
