Chapter 8 - The Federal Raid

Diane panicked completely and dropped the loaded revolver onto the wooden floorboards.
I did not waste a single millisecond of the distraction.
I lunged forward and tackled Wade’s father aggressively to the ground.
I scooped Tommy into my arms and shielded his fragile body with my own.
The front door of the cabin was smashed open by a heavy police battering ram.
Heavily armed FBI agents flooded into the room and ordered everyone to freeze.
They slammed Diane against the wall and locked tight zip-ties around her wrists.
Wade’s father struggled against the agents, screaming that he was a judge with total legal immunity.
The lead federal agent laughed and showed him a copy of the encrypted hard drive.
“Your immunity expired the second we found your human trafficking ledger, your honor,” the agent stated bluntly.
I carried Tommy outside into the cool night air and held him incredibly tight.
My little boy cried into my shoulder, but this time they were tears of genuine relief.
I thanked the lead FBI agent and asked if it was finally safe to go get my daughter.
The agent’s face suddenly turned pale as he listened to a frantic update on his radio headset.
He looked at me with an expression of pure dread that made my stomach completely drop.
“Wade just assaulted two guards and escaped from the hospital holding ward ten minutes ago,” the agent reported.
He said that Wade had stolen a vehicle and was currently untraceable by local authorities.
I realized with horrifying clarity exactly where that monster was heading.
He was going straight back to the house where Ava was completely alone and defenseless.

I handed Tommy safely to the federal medics and sprinted toward an idling FBI vehicle.
I did not ask for permission before I jumped into the driver's seat and slammed the gas pedal to the floor.
