Chapter 6 - The Rescue Mission

I pushed the rental car to its absolute limits as I tore down the dark country roads.
Ava had cleverly activated the location sharing feature on Tommy’s secret gaming tablet before they left.
The glowing blue dot on my phone screen led me deep into the isolated, foggy marshlands.
I abandoned my car on the side of a dirt road and proceeded on foot to avoid detection.
The thick fog clung to the swampy ground as I navigated through the tall, wet reeds.
I finally spotted a massive steel gate blocking the entrance to a heavily fortified compound.
The security cameras were old, and their blind spots were incredibly easy for a trained soldier to exploit.
I scaled the chain-link fence effortlessly and dropped silently into the muddy courtyard.
I crept toward the main cabin and peered cautiously through a dirty glass window.
Wade’s father was standing in the center of the room, holding Tommy tightly by the collar of his shirt.
Tommy was weeping silently, his tiny face pale with absolute terror.
I drew my tactical knife and prepared to kick the wooden door completely off its hinges.
I was ready to unleash hell on the man who was tormenting my helpless son.
Suddenly, I felt the cold, unmistakable ring of a steel gun barrel press hard against the back of my neck.
“Drop the knife and put your hands behind your head, Mark,” a familiar female voice ordered.
It was Diane, standing in the fog with a loaded revolver aimed perfectly at my skull.
I slowly dropped the blade into the mud and raised my hands in surrender.
“How could you possibly let them do this to your own flesh and blood?” I asked her with pure disgust.

Diane laughed bitterly and prodded me forward toward the cabin door.
“You have absolutely no idea how the real world works, Mark,” my ex-wife sneered.
