Chapter 8 - The Standoff

The roaring jet engines seemed to fade into absolute silence as I stared at the gun pointed at my child.
Clara’s eyes were completely wild, fully stripped of the elegant mask she had worn for fifteen years.
She screamed at Glen to drag Ariel into the cabin so they could take off immediately.
Glen remained frozen on the metal stairs, looking back and forth between his terrified daughter and his deranged lover.
He was a selfish, greedy coward, but even he seemed horrified that Clara was willing to murder a three-year-old.
I slowly raised my hands and walked deliberately toward the plane, offering myself in Ariel’s place.
I told Clara she could shoot me right now, but she would never escape my father's wrath if she hurt his granddaughter.
Clara laughed hysterically, declaring that she never actually cared about Glen or the baby inside her.
She confessed that Glen was just a pathetic, easily manipulated pawn in her grand scheme.
Glen’s eyes widened in sheer betrayal as he finally realized he had destroyed his family for a woman who despised him.
Clara ordered Glen to shoot me, tossing a second gun down the metal stairs toward his feet.
Glen slowly bent down, picked up the heavy weapon, and looked directly into my tear-filled eyes.
He raised the trembling barrel, aiming it squarely at my chest.

Before he could pull the trigger, Marcus fired a single, perfectly aimed precision shot from behind me.
The bullet shattered the airplane window directly next to Clara's head, sending a shower of glass into her face.
