Chapter 6 - The Chase

I threw myself into the passenger seat of the sports car before it had even fully stopped.

The private investigator slammed on the gas pedal, and we rocketed out of the alleyway in pursuit of Glen's SUV.

He introduced himself as Marcus and handed me a tablet displaying a blinking red GPS dot.

He had planted a tracker on Clara’s vehicle weeks ago, anticipating they would eventually try to run.

We swerved violently through the suburban streets, ignoring red lights and terrified pedestrians.

I pulled out my phone and dialed Glen’s number, praying he would be arrogant enough to answer.

He picked up on the second ring, the sound of rushing wind filling the background.

Glen laughed cruelly into the receiver, telling me I was always too naive for my own good.

He bragged that the trust fund money was already cleared, and they were heading to a private airfield.

I begged him to leave Ariel out of this, offering to confess to the fake crimes if he just let her go.

Clara’s voice suddenly echoed through the speaker, dripping with absolute venom.

She told me that Ariel was the ultimate insurance policy to make sure my wealthy father never stopped paying them.

I screamed into the phone, threatening to kill them both if they touched a single hair on her head.

The line abruptly went dead, leaving me in a state of pure, unadulterated panic.

Marcus told me to hold on tight because the GPS dot showed they were merging onto the interstate.

Just as we accelerated onto the highway on-ramp, a massive commercial dump truck pulled directly into our path.

The truck intentionally slammed its brakes, completely blocking the only road leading out of the city.
