Chapter 5 - The Distraction

My father grabbed my shoulder tightly and told me to stay hidden inside the vehicle.

He stepped out of the Mercedes, using his commanding presence and legal knowledge to intercept the officers.

I watched through the tinted glass as he aggressively demanded to see their search warrants.

The delay gave me exactly what I needed: a brief window of opportunity to save my daughter.

I slipped out of the passenger side door and crawled through the decorative bushes lining the side of the house.

I crept toward the backyard gate, intending to grab Ariel and run to a safe house.

The pool party had descended into total chaos, with confused parents grabbing their children and packing up their bags.

I frantically scanned the patio, the pool, and the bouncy castle for Ariel's bright pink swimsuit.

She was absolutely nowhere to be found.

I ran into the kitchen, screaming her name, but the house was entirely empty.

Then I noticed the sliding glass door leading to the garage was wide open.

I sprinted onto the concrete floor just in time to see Glen's SUV tearing out of the alleyway.

He had strapped Ariel into her car seat, and Clara was sitting shotgun with a smug grin on her face.

They had used the police arrival as the perfect distraction to kidnap my daughter.

I fell to my knees on the oily garage floor, letting out a primal scream of absolute despair.

Then, a sleek black sports car abruptly pulled into the garage, stopping inches from my knees.

The driver rolled down the window, revealing the private investigator my father had hired.

He told me to get in immediately if I ever wanted to see my little girl again.
