Chapter 4 - The Framed Wife

I stared at the glossy photograph, unable to comprehend the sheer scale of Clara’s deception.
My father explained that Clara was a professional con artist who had targeted our family's wealth for years.
She had seduced Glen to gain access to my personal signature on the joint company accounts.
My father warned me that Clara and Glen had already forged my name on dozens of illegal offshore transfers.
If they disappeared tonight, all the federal evidence would point directly at me.
I would go to federal prison for embezzlement, and Glen would take Ariel away from me forever.
A fierce, protective rage completely replaced the heartbreak in my chest.
I told my father we needed to call the FBI immediately and hand over the private investigator's file.
My father shook his head and said we were already completely out of time.
He pointed through the tinted windshield toward the front yard of the house.
Two black police cruisers had just pulled quietly into my driveway.
Four uniformed officers stepped out, heavily armed and looking entirely serious.
My father checked his watch and noted that Clara’s police chief lover had clearly moved the timeline up.
They were not here to enjoy the birthday party or eat a slice of cake.
One of the officers approached the front door and loudly demanded that I step outside with my hands visible.

I realized with absolute horror that Glen had already called them to report the stolen money.
My husband was framing me for a federal crime while our daughter was singing happy birthday in the backyard.
