Chapter 3 - The Oblivious Father

My knees gave out, and I collapsed onto the edge of the guest bed.

Clara was pregnant with my husband’s child.

Ariel’s innocent words, "Daddy's in there," suddenly took on a horrifying, double meaning.

They were planning to steal my family's money and run away together.

I knew I had to warn my father, who was currently outside drinking a beer and laughing with the neighbors.

My father was a wealthy real estate developer, and Clara had always been obsessed with his money.

I wiped my tears, shoved the burner phone into my pocket, and walked back out to the party.

I pulled my dad away from the barbecue grill, insisting we needed to talk in his car for a moment.

Once we were sitting in the quiet interior of his Mercedes, I handed him the burner phone.

I braced myself, expecting him to clutch his chest or break down in tears over his wife's ultimate betrayal.

Instead, my father calmly read the text messages and handed the phone back to me.

His expression remained completely flat, devoid of any shock or heartbreak.

He reached into his glove compartment and pulled out a thick manila folder.

He told me he had been tracking their affair for six months using a private investigator.

I stared at him in absolute disbelief, asking why he had let this sick charade continue.

My father looked out the window at Clara, a dark and terrifying smile spreading across his face.

He whispered that Glen was not the only man Clara was sleeping with.

Then he handed me a photograph from the folder that made my stomach aggressively churn.

The picture showed Clara kissing a man in a dark alley, and that man was the chief of the local police department.
