Chapter 9 - The Safe Haven

The sun was just beginning to rise when I crashed the massive truck through the security gates of the State Police Headquarters.

Dozens of armed state troopers flooded out of the building, aiming their rifles at the vehicle.

I threw my hands out the window and screamed for help, holding Lily tightly against my chest.

A senior detective named Captain Harris quickly realized we were victims, not terrorists.

They brought us inside the warm, secure building and immediately called for medical teams.

I handed Captain Harris the truck driver's cell phone, which I had found on the floorboard.

The phone contained hundreds of text messages proving the entire murder conspiracy between David, Eleanor, and Vanessa.

Captain Harris deployed three heavily armed tactical teams to the mountain cabin immediately.

Two hours later, the captain walked into our recovery room with a comforting smile.

"We got them," Captain Harris announced, pouring me a cup of hot coffee.

"David, Eleanor, and Vanessa have all been arrested and denied bail by a federal judge."

He also confirmed that Officer Jenkins and the corrupt local police chief were in federal custody.

I broke down crying, the immense weight of the nightmare finally lifting off my shoulders.

Lily was resting comfortably in a warm hospital bed, eating a slice of pizza and watching cartoons.

Captain Harris told me that we would be moved to an FBI safehouse for the weekend just to process the paperwork in peace.

They transported us in an armored convoy to a beautiful, highly secure home in the suburbs.

The federal agents stationed outside the property made me feel safer than I had ever felt in my entire life.

I tucked Lily into her soft, clean bed and kissed her bruised cheek.

The worst was finally over, and my daughter was going to be a very wealthy, completely safe little girl.

I walked into the luxurious master bathroom to wash the dried mud and blood off my face.

I looked at my reflection in the mirror, finally recognizing the strong woman staring back at me.

My new secure federal phone suddenly buzzed on the marble countertop.
