Chapter 5 - The Mountain Cabin

Lily was tied securely to a heavy wooden dining chair in the center of the room.
Her little face was swollen and bruised from Vanessa’s vicious attack at the party.
David paced back and forth in front of her, swinging the iron poker casually in his hand.
Eleanor and Vanessa were sitting on the leather sofa, sipping expensive red wine.
"We just have to make it look like a tragic accident," David said coldly.
"Once the child is out of the picture, her biological grandfather's trust fund defaults directly to the parents."
I pressed my hand against the cold wet glass, trying to process his horrifying words.
My biological father had died when I was an infant, and Eleanor always told me he left us nothing.
I suddenly realized Lily had inherited millions, and my own family was willing to slaughter her for the money.
"Just get it over with, David," Vanessa complained, checking her perfectly manicured nails.
"I have a teaching interview on Monday and I need my beauty sleep."
David sighed and raised the heavy iron poker high above his head.
I did not have time to think or plan a subtle entrance.
I raised the police pistol and fired three shots directly through the large glass window.
The glass shattered into a thousand deadly pieces, raining down all over the living room.
Vanessa screamed and dove behind the sofa to protect herself.
David dropped the iron poker and covered his head in sheer panic.
I climbed through the broken window frame, ignoring the deep cuts on my hands and knees.
I aimed the gun directly at my husband’s chest.
"Step away from my daughter," I commanded, wiping the blood from my cheek.
David slowly raised his hands, a nervous, calculating smile spreading across his face.

"Calm down, Sarah, we can share the money," he pleaded softly.
Before I could pull the trigger, the lights inside the cabin suddenly went pitch black.
