Chapter 1 - The Darkest Secret

My daughter trembled under the harsh fluorescent lights of the examination room.

She looked terrified at her grandmother, then turned her tear-filled eyes toward me.

"It was Grandma and Aunt Vanessa," Lily whispered.

The words shattered my entire reality into a million jagged pieces.

My mother, Eleanor, immediately let out a loud, theatrical gasp.

"She is lying!"

Eleanor pointed a shaking finger at my sweet eight-year-old girl.

"Sarah, you know how she makes up these horrible stories for attention."

I stepped between my mother and my daughter.

"Get away from her," I demanded, my voice cold and unrecognizable.

Dr. Reeves moved protectively toward Lily, shielding her with her own body.

"I am a mandated reporter, and I have already called 911," the doctor stated firmly.

Eleanor’s fake tears instantly vanished, replaced by a look of pure, venomous calculation.

She reached into her expensive designer purse and pulled out her cell phone.

"You are making a massive mistake, Sarah," my mother hissed as she dialed a number.

She walked to the far corner of the room and whispered frantically into the receiver.

I ignored her and wrapped my arms around Lily, promising her that nobody would ever hurt her again.

Heavy footsteps suddenly echoed down the clinic hallway.

Two uniformed police officers arrived at the locked door and knocked loudly.

Dr. Reeves unlocked the door to let them inside.

I felt a massive wave of relief wash over me.

I pointed directly at my mother and told the officers to arrest her for child abuse.

The older officer did not even look at Eleanor.

Instead, he pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt and walked straight toward me.

He grabbed my wrists and violently slammed me against the examination table.

"Sarah Miller, you are under arrest for the aggravated assault of a minor," the officer growled.
