Chapter 2 - The Stolen Child

I screamed in absolute terror as the cold metal clamped tightly around my wrists.
"What are you doing?"
I fought against the officer's heavy grip, but he was far too strong.
"My mother is the one who hurt her!"
Eleanor stepped forward, producing a perfect, heartbreaking sob for the police.
"Thank God you got here in time," my mother cried, clutching her chest.
"My daughter has been suffering from severe mental illness and she keeps hurting my poor granddaughter."
Dr. Reeves stepped in front of the officers with her hands raised.
"That is completely false," the doctor argued loudly.
"The medical evidence clearly contradicts this woman's absurd story."
The second police officer placed a heavy hand on the doctor's shoulder.
"Step aside, Doctor, unless you want to be arrested for obstructing justice."
I looked at the older officer’s uniform and noticed his nametag read "Officer Jenkins."
I suddenly remembered my mother had recently started dating a powerful local judge whose last name was Jenkins.
The entire local police department was already sitting comfortably in my mother's pocket.
"Mommy, please don't leave me!"
Lily reached out her bruised little arms toward me.
"I will come back for you, baby!"
I screamed as the officers dragged me out of the examination room.
They forced me through the crowded waiting room and shoved me into the back of a police cruiser.
The heavy doors locked from the outside, trapping me in a cage of panic.
Officer Jenkins climbed into the driver's seat and adjusted his rearview mirror to look at me.
He smiled, a dark and terrifying grin that made my blood run cold.

"Your mother sends her regards," he whispered as he started the engine.
He pulled out of the parking lot and drove in the exact opposite direction of the police station.
