Chapter 3 - The Dark Road

The police cruiser sped down a deserted, winding road toward the edge of town.

I realized with horrifying clarity that I was not being taken to a jail cell.

"Where are you taking me?"

I kicked the metal partition separating the front and back seats.

Officer Jenkins simply turned up the volume on the radio to drown out my screams.

I desperately searched my pockets, but they had already confiscated my phone.

I looked out the window and saw the thick, dense trees of the state forest blurring past us.

They were going to make me disappear so I could never testify against my mother and sister.

I closed my eyes and tried to calm my racing heart.

I needed to find a way to survive for Lily.

I slipped my hands down my legs, contorting my body in the cramped backseat.

I managed to step my feet through my handcuffed arms, bringing my hands to the front of my body.

I reached for the seatbelt buckle and wrapped the heavy metal clasp around my knuckles like a weapon.

The police cruiser slowed down as it approached a secluded dirt path in the woods.

Jenkins put the car in park and unholstered his heavy service weapon.

He opened his door and walked around to the back of the cruiser.

He unlocked my door and yanked it open, expecting me to be cuffed behind my back.

I did not hesitate for a single second.

I swung my fist with all my strength, driving the metal seatbelt buckle directly into his nose.

The bone shattered with a sickening crunch.

May you like

Jenkins screamed in agony and dropped his gun into the mud.

I shoved him backward and lunged for the weapon.
