The message read: "I am so sorry, Sarah, they threatened to murder my entire family if I didn't help them."

I heard the distinct, metallic click of the deadbolt locking from the outside.
I dropped the phone and grabbed the brass door handle, but it refused to turn.

I screamed for the federal agents standing guard outside, but the house remained dead silent.
A cold breeze swept through the dark bathroom, carrying the faint scent of expensive cologne.

The man held a small, glowing flashlight under his chin, illuminating a face I thought I would never see again.
It was my biological father, the billionaire I was told had died twenty-five years ago.

He held a loaded syringe in his right hand and smiled a terrifying, razor-sharp smile.
"Did you really think I would let a stupid little girl inherit my fortune that easily, Sarah?"
