Chapter 8 - The Grandfather's Secret

I stared at my grandfather’s signature on the immunity agreement, feeling a massive surge of unexpected hope.

He had known all along that my family would try to destroy me, and he had built a secret escape hatch.

I looked Agent Vance directly in the eye and agreed to do whatever it took to bring them to justice.

Vance explained that my father was desperately trying to sell off the last of the family's stolen art collection tonight.

He needed this final infusion of cash to buy fake passports and flee the country before the syndicate found him.

The FBI needed me to wear a hidden wire and record my father confessing to the entire criminal enterprise.

I agreed to the dangerous plan and allowed a female agent to tape a tiny microphone beneath my sweater.

Vance drove me to an abandoned industrial warehouse on the edge of the Chicago river.

He handed me a small earpiece and promised that his heavily armed tactical team would be listening closely.

I stepped out of the van and walked slowly into the cavernous, dimly lit building.

My father was pacing nervously near a stack of wooden crates, holding a silver briefcase.

He looked absolutely shocked when I walked out of the shadows and confronted him.

I demanded to know why he had forged my signature and framed me for his own crimes.

My father sneered and told me that I was an ungrateful child who owed this family everything.

He proudly admitted to orchestrating the offshore fraud and blamed my brother for the syndicate murder.

His confession was crystal clear, and I knew the FBI was recording every single damning word.

I asked him who was coming to buy the stolen art in the middle of the night.

My father smiled a greasy, confident smile and told me the buyer was someone I knew very well.

A sleek black car slowly drove into the warehouse and parked just a few feet away from us.

The driver’s side door opened, and the buyer stepped elegantly out of the vehicle.

My heart stopped completely as I recognized the woman wearing a sharp designer suit.

It was Nora Whitman, the lawyer I thought the syndicate had murdered.
