Chapter 1 - The Morning After

My father stood at the head of the table and stared at me with eyes as cold as shattered glass.

He had just told me to pack my things and leave the only home I had ever known.

I did not cry or beg for forgiveness because Kingsley women were trained to never show weakness.

I simply nodded my head, turned on my heel, and walked up the grand staircase.

It took me less than an hour to pack my entire life into two large suitcases.

I walked out the front door without saying goodbye to my mother or my older brother.

The harsh Chicago wind bit through my thin coat as I dragged my luggage down the long driveway.

I pulled out my phone and ordered a rideshare to a cheap diner downtown.

When the driver dropped me off, I tried to pay for a hot cup of coffee using my debit card.

The cashier frowned and told me the card had been declined.

I tried two other credit cards, but the machine flashed the exact same red error message.

My father had already frozen every single bank account linked to my name.

He wanted to starve me into submission so I would reverse the trust fund.

I pulled out a twenty dollar bill I had hidden in my shoe and paid for the coffee.

I sat in the corner booth and dialed the private number of Nora Whitman, my grandfather’s attorney.

She answered on the first ring, and her voice sounded incredibly strained.

I told her that my father had kicked me out and frozen all my daily expenses.

She told me to stay exactly where I was and promised to pick me up in ten minutes.

When her black sedan pulled up to the diner, I quickly threw my bags into the trunk.

I climbed into the passenger seat and thanked her for coming to my rescue.

Nora did not smile as she merged the car back onto the busy highway.

She gripped the steering wheel so tightly that her knuckles were entirely white.

I asked her what was wrong and why she looked so terrified.

She kept her eyes on the road and told me that the three million dollars had just saved my life.

Nora explained that my father’s real estate company was secretly bankrupt.

She said he had been desperately relying on my inheritance to cover a massive, hidden debt.

I asked her who he owed so much money to that he would throw his own daughter onto the street.

Nora swallowed hard and looked at me with pure fear in her eyes.

She told me that my father had borrowed five million dollars from the Russian syndicate.

And she revealed that the syndicate had given him until midnight tonight to pay them back.
