Chapter 3 - The Burner Phone

I backed out of the destroyed motel room and ran down the outdoor corridor as fast as I could.
I found a nearby convenience store and used my remaining cash to buy a cheap burner phone.
My hands were shaking violently as I dialed Nora’s private number from memory.
She answered immediately and sounded breathless when I told her about the ransacked room.
She promised to send a trusted driver to pick me up at the gas station across the street.
Thirty minutes later, a heavily tinted SUV arrived and whisked me away to a secure safe house in the suburbs.
The safe house was a small, unassuming brick cottage hidden behind tall pine trees.
Nora was waiting inside with a hot cup of tea and a large cardboard box.
She told me the box contained the private files my grandfather had ordered her to give me on my eighteenth birthday.
She said my grandfather had always known my father was corrupt and dangerous.
I sat at the kitchen table and slowly opened the dusty cardboard box.
Inside, I found dozens of financial ledgers, bank statements, and encrypted flash drives.
I spent the next three hours poring over the documents by the dim light of the kitchen lamp.
The papers revealed that my father had been embezzling money from his own clients for over a decade.
But the most shocking discovery was a secret file labeled with my own name.
My grandfather had documented how my father planned to frame me for all the corporate fraud as soon as I turned eighteen.
The three million dollar inheritance was never just a gift.
It was my grandfather’s way of giving me the resources to hire lawyers and fight back.
I realized my father did not just want the money to pay the syndicate.
He needed my signature on the trust documents to legally tie me to his fraudulent offshore accounts.
Just as I was processing this massive betrayal, my new burner phone vibrated on the table.
I stared at the screen in utter confusion because Nora was the only person who had the number.
I slowly picked up the phone and pressed it to my ear without saying a word.
A deep, heavily accented voice echoed through the speaker.
The man chuckled darkly and told me that running away would only make things worse.

He said he knew exactly which safe house I was hiding in.
And he warned me that Nora Whitman was absolutely no longer in a position to protect me.
